RIP Madeline L'Engle

From her obit in the New York Times:

What turned out to be her masterpiece was rejected by 26 publishers. Editors at Farrar, Straus and Giroux loved it enough to publish it, but told her that she should not be disappointed if it failed.
That book? A Wrinkle in Time

Noooooooooooooooooo! Even now I still re-read her books, my grandkids will be the 3rd generation to grow up on them.

Is true about some people not getting her though. A friend of mine had to take a course on children's lit for her education degree and needed my help to get through it because she really did not get L'Engle among several others. Thought the books were godawful.

Kind of explains some of why our education system is in trouble though...a lot of the people becoming teachers are about as imaginative as a fence post. Love my friend but she really is not someone likely to light a fire under anyone, especially not a child.

This country needs more L'Engles and fewer drones.
